The Wedding Cake
|
|
Wedding Cakes began as an ancient Roman ritual in which
guests of the bride and groom would throw wheat at the couple to
symbolize a fertile marriage. The first wedding cakes were similar
to modern day fruitcakes.
Today, wedding cakes come in an assortment of tantalizing
flavors. There is no customary
flavor.
|
Couples have the freedom to select their flavor of
choice with many choosing alternating layers to tempt the palate. Carrot,
hazelnut, orange and mocha are among the favorites of today’s bakeries.
Be sure to select a professional baker that
specializes in wedding cakes. Ask to see their wedding cake portfolio. Be
sure to sample flavors you are interested in. The bakery should be
reserved four months in advance.
Today’s cakes are true works of art. Cakes can be
adorned in real flowers depicting designs in the bridal bouquet. You will
need to decide if you prefer to decorate your wedding cake with real
blooms or sugar flowers and whether you will have a cake topper. Be sure
to place your order for your wedding cake six to eight weeks before the
wedding day.
Special Note - Don’t forget to save your top wedding
cake tier for the first anniversary together. The preservation methods are
very good today, the cake even a year later, should still be flavorful as
long as it is packed securely. Ask the bakery for preservation
tips.
